Hello dear readers,

Happy new year! I understand this greeting is coming late, so please kindly forgive me. The current state of the Nigerian economy seems to be dampening the enthusiasm and positive outlook that usually accompanies a new year for most people. The falling value of the naira and the fall in the price of crude has left the economy is really dire straits. CBN restrictions on foreign exchange and other financial instruments has made it extremely difficult for businesses to conduct their activities. Sadly, it is the average Nigerian struggling to earn a decent living that is suffering the most as many companies have been retrenching workers on a regular basis. As one of those who strongly believed in the current administration; I must admit that I’m getting a little impatient and a bit disappointment as they are yet to prove that they can stabilise the economy and stimulate economic growth.

Amidst all of this however, I see an opportunity for the government to embark on the real business of development with regards to the diversification of the economy. For as long as my memory serves me, almost every administration at least since 1999 has always talked about the need for diversification, but they have failed to achieve anything substantial on a large scale. With the current state of affairs, diversification is not only desirable but inevitable. More so, it is unfair that ordinary Nigerians have to bear the brunt for the failure of their leaders to plan adequately for the future; as a consequence, it is important that government finds a way to identify with them. This in my opinion would include austerity measures such as pay cuts from the executive down to the legislature.

On a personal level, I am sure most of you have goals and aspirations for the new year; it is my desire that you attain them and even surpass them. However to attain them, make sure they are as concise as possible so that you can use your energy and resources efficiently. In addition to that, do not hesitate to dream and take actual steps to actualize your dreams; my life experiences constantly affirm my belief that impossible is nothing!

In view of the foregoing, I shall leave you with some quotes from one of my best reads of last year ‘The Alchemist’:

when you want something, all the universe conspires to help you achieve it”

 “making a decision is only the beginning of things, when someone makes a decision, he is really diving into a strong current that will carry him to places he never dreamed of when he first made the decision”

and finally one from the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs;

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Do not be trapped by dogma, which is living with the result of other people’s thinking. Do not let the noise of other people’s opinion drown out your own inner voice. Most importantly, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition, they somehow already know what you truly want to become, everything else is secondary

I wish you all an absolutely amazing, fabulous and fulfilling year!

Amaka 😀
